Eagle Farm Racecourse set for $22 million upgrade
Queensland’s premier racetrack will undergo a $22 million upgrade ahead of the 2015 Brisbane Racing Carnival, with the refurbishment of Eagle Farm Racecourse.
Queensland Racing Minister Steve Dickson said the redevelopment was part of the Queensland Government’s plan to rebuild the State’s racing industry, explaining “this project, part of (a) $110 million (package) for racing infrastructure improvements across the State, will deliver a world class racetrack for Queensland’s foremost racing venue.
“I am determined to create a strong future for Queensland racing and this much-needed upgrade project, to reconstruct the course and at the same time construct vehicle and pedestrian tunnels, forms a big part of that commitment.”
Treasurer and Member for Clayfield Tim Nicholls said the initiative was another way the Government was restoring confidence in the 30,000 strong racing sector, adding “racing has been conducted at Eagle Farm for 149 years, but the last time the track was renovated was more than 40 years ago in 1972.
“This long overdue refurbishment of the Eagle Farm track will stimulate wagering growth on the venue, which provides more funding for the industry as a whole, and will get more patrons to the track for race days.
“In 2013 the Brisbane Racing Carnival contributed more than $6 million to the Queensland economy, and with the upgrade due to be unveiled ahead of the Carnival next year we’re looking forward to seeing that contribution grow.”
The track upgrade will include reconstruction of the turf racing surface including new drainage, irrigation, fencing, running rails, timing equipment and growing medium. The project also opens the area inside the track for stabling and inner training track facilities.
Racing Queensland will also undertake tunnel and car park works in conjunction with the track upgrades.
Racing Queensland Chairman Kevin Dixon said the upgrade of the Eagle Farm course-proper would provide long-lasting benefits for the state’s racing industry and formed an integral element of Racing Queensland’s vision for the future.
Dixon concluded “Eagle Farm is the most important asset in racing and this project will give the industry confidence that our flagship racecourse has the best racing surface in Queensland.
“Racing Queensland appreciates the continued support of the Queensland Government in delivering another project in the Industry Infrastructure Strategy.”
Construction on the refurbishment project is due to begin in early August.
