Double win for 2012 Santos Tour Down Under
The Australian Event Awards have delivered a double win for the 2012 Santos Tour Down Under.
Presented at Sydney's ANZ Stadium last night (13th September) the 2012 Santos Tour Down Under was named Best Sporting Event and Best Tourism Event.
Other major winners were Opera Australia, which was awared Best Event of 2012 for its La Traviata on Sydney Harbour and Melbourne's Federation Square which won Best Community Event Award for its Light in Winter 2012 event.
Welcoming the double award for the 2012 Santos Tour Down Under, Events South Australia General Manager Hitaf Rasheed stated "this is wonderful recognition for a cycling festival that continues to delight South Australians and visitors alike.
"We know this is an event with enormous appeal and tonight's success at the Australian Event Awards shows industry experts agree."
The Santos Tour Down Under has now been named Best Tourism Event at the Australian Event Awards for four years running and Best Sporting Event for the first time.
Rasheed added "securing the coveted title of Best Sporting Event reflects the Santos Tour Down Under's national significance.
"In 2012 the Santos Tour Down Under attracted a total of 760,600 spectators, with more than 36,100 cycling fans visiting South Australia specifically for the event.
"From 20th to 27th January next year we will be celebrating 15 years of the Tour in South Australia and I'm sure it will be an occasion to remember."
