Doha prepares for hosting IPC Athletics World Championships
The city of Doha is in the final stages of preparations for the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Athletics World Championships 2015, the biggest Para-sport event ever to be held in the Middle East.
Set to be held at the Qatar Sports Club between 21st and 31st October, this will be the first time in history the event will be hosted in the Middle East, and is expected to leave a lasting legacy as the Suhaim bin Hamad Stadium (the main venue for the games), hotels and other facilities are further upgraded to better cater to people with disabilities.
The Championships will feature around 1,500 athletes from more than 100 countries and will serve as one of the last major competitions before the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games.
Looking forward to the event, Thani Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, President of the Local Organising Committee and Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee, explained “we want to use the World Championships to show the incredible stories behind some of the athletes that are competing in order to raise awareness of para-sport and people with a disability.
Commenting on the value of Doha staging the event, Qatar’s Abdelrahman Abdelqader, a London 2012 Paralympic Games, added “the World Championships will be a perfect opportunity to raise awareness of para-athletics and disability sport in Qatar and across the whole region.
“People from the Middle East will be inspired and will realise that disability is not a hindrance and that incredible things can be accomplished if you persist. I really hope that we will inspire a new generation of athletes.”
