Deaflympics athletes receive $60,000 to compete on world stage

Deaf and hard of hearing athletes have received a major funding boost with the Federal Government contributing $60,000 to help them participate at the Deaflympics in Bulgaria, next month.

Federal Minister for Sport, Senator Kate Lundy made the announcement yesterday (19th June) at an Active Deaf Kids Multi Sports Day at Belconnen Stadium, in Canberra.

Senator Lundy explained "this funding will make all the difference for our elite Australian athletes heading to the Deaflympics heading to Sofia.

"Together with the Active Deaf Kids participation program, demonstrates there are pathways in place for children who are deaf or hard of hearing to realise their sporting dreams."

Six Australian teams representing athletics, swimming, basketball, cycling, tenpin bowling and tennis will take part at the Deaflympics, which run from 25th July until 4th August 2013.

The funding is being provided through the Australian Sports Commission and will see 35 Australian athletes compete in Bulgaria.

The Australian Sports Commission has also provided $85,000 in grants to Deaf Sports Australia this financial year and invested $200,000 to continue the Active Deaf Kids program over two years in 2012-2013 and 2013-2014.
