Darwin launches inaugural Movement Strategy
City of Darwin has launched its inaugural Movement Strategy as Council aims to make it easier for people to move around the city by improving streetscapes, infrastructure and connectivity while reducing the impact of transport on the environment.
Darwin Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the Movement Strategy will help prioritise areas for Council such as pedestrian footpaths, shared footpaths, bicycle networks, transport links and shared mobility access to create greater connectivity.
“Council wants to hear from the community about their movement preferences and how we can make it easier for people to walk, cycle, access public transport and use alternative modes of transport, including the use of electric vehicles, to inform the development of the strategy.
“We want our movement network to be modern and sustainable, promoting an active city that is accessible and safe for all residents and visitors,” the Lord Mayor said.
Improvements could include overhauling major intersections, developing a cycling superhighway between key locations and building safer routes that make walking and cycling to schools much easier.
The Movement Strategy will be further supported by other Council initiatives such as SmartDarwin, Greening and Cooling, and Streetscape Beautification.
