Cricket World Cup countdown begins in Perth

The countdown to the first matches of the International Cricket Council's Cricket World Cup in Perth has begun with the unveiling of the tournament's countdown clock and the start of ticket sales in Forrest Place yesterday (Friday 14th February).

Western Australian Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron said the first ball would be bowled in Australia for the ICC Cricket World Cup one year from today and Perth would host its first matches shortly after.

Minister Waldron explained "not only will these games give people the opportunity to enjoy the pinnacle of international cricket action, they will promote Perth as a tourism destination and provide an opportunity to strengthen economic and trade ties with India and the United Arab Emirates.

"Last time around, in 1992, we saw one of the greatest run scorers in World Cup cricket at the WACA Ground when Sachin Tendulkar played his first World Cup match just five years after being a volunteer at the 1987 World Cup, jointly hosted by India and Pakistan."

Western Australian Tourism Minister Liza Harvey said the Western Australian Government, through Tourism WA, was proud to support the ICC Cricket World Cup in Perth.

She explained "with a television audience estimated at more than one billion people, the Cricket World Cup will provide valuable exposure of Perth and Western Australia around the world and add vibrancy to the State."

Perth is hosting three matches at the WACA Ground:

• India v United Arab Emirates on Saturday 28th February 2015
• Australia v Afghanistan on Wednesday 4th March 2015
• India v West Indies on Friday 6th March 2015.

All children's tickets to the Perth matches are $5 and general admission tickets for adults start at $20.

The Western Australia Government is supporting the Cricket World Cup with a $2 million commitment, including funds to assist the WACA Ground in meeting the ICC's venue requirements to host the World Cup, including making media centre improvements.

Tickets for the ICC Cricket World Cup are also now on sale.
