Craig Phillips appointed Australian Commonwealth Games Association Chief Executive
The Australian Commonwealth Games Association (ACGA) has announced the appointment of Craig Phillips to the position of Chief Executive, taking the place of Perry Crosswhite who recently retired from the position after more than 20 years.
Phillips brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the position having recently held the position of Secretary-General of the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) for nine years. Prior to being Secretary-General he held a number of positions with the AOC over the past 24 years including Director of Sport and Technical Director.
Phillips’ career in sports management extends some 33 years, including eight years with the New South Wales Department of Sport and Recreation prior to joining the AOC.
Welcoming his appointment, Phillips stated “the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games present a fantastic opportunity for our athletes to perform at their very best in front of their fellow Australians.
“Doing all I can to help our Team reclaim its place at the top of the medal tally will be a key focus for me.
“Gold Coast 2018 gives the Commonwealth Games Movement a great platform to strengthen our connection with the Australian public, government agencies and the corporate sector. I am committed to finding ways for all Australians to be part of Movement.
“Over the last 20 years, Perry has worked to continue and strengthen the Commonwealth Games Movement in Australia and overseas. I look forward to working with ACGA President Sam Coffa, the Executive Committee and the ACGA’s members to build on this foundation.”
Coffa said the ACGA is very pleased with the appointment saying, adding “Craig comes to us with great experience and knowledge of the ACGA’s core business which is preparing and taking athletes to the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games.
“Over the next eight years the ACGA will send teams to two Commonwealth Games - Gold Coast in 2018 and Durban in 2022, and to two Commonwealth Youth Games - Samoa this September and St Lucia in 2017.
“We look forward to Craig, as CEO, being responsible for these missions along with all of the other ACGA programs.”
Perry Crosswhite, who held the position until his recent retirement, will continue to assist the ACGA during a transition period, and through the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee.
