Cowboys don't last in the modern fitness industry

Fitness Australia, the health and fitness industry association, has responded to recent media articles questioning the standard of personal trainers in the fitness industry.

The association has also highlighted changes it has made to help consumers more clearly identify qualified registered personal trainers making it even harder for the cowboys to stick around.

The fitness industry association self-regulates the industry but doesn't control who is approved to deliver the Fitness Training Package and the way in which they deliver the qualification as this is in the hands of
government agencies.

As Chief Executive Lauretta Stace, explains "Fitness Australia's rigorous continuing education scheme ensures that exercise professionals who are registered with Fitness Australia are required to keep their education up to date.

"If they don't then they won't get to keep their 'license' to work in the industry."

All fitness centres, gyms and personal training businesses that are registered with Fitness Austalia adhere to the Code of Practice which includes employing Registered Exercise Professionals.

Stace adds "Fitness Australia has recognised the increase in demand for fitness services and has adjusted its professional registration system to help consumers and employers more clearly identify who they want to use or employ.

"It's simply a matter of motivating the consumer to ask to see the credentials of their prospective trainer and that should include Fitness Australia's logo.

"The three tiered system is based on their highest qualification and years of experience in the industry."

According to new findings by Access Economics, the fitness industry is having a major positive impact on the economy, the workforce, Government health costs and the nation's well-being.

Access Economics' report 'Let's get physical: The economic contribution of fitness centres in Australia' suggests that the current fitness centre industry in Australia has the potential to deliver savings of up to $107.9 million in direct health care costs associated with the prevention of chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.
