Councillor gives Gold Coast's world-class sports facility $180,000 boost

Gold Coast Councillor Jan Grew has donated a further $180,000 to the construction of the new Sports House, a world-class water sports facility to be constructed on the southern shores of Lake Orr at Varsity Lakes.
Councillor Grew, who attended the Sports House fundraising event on 30th March, has already donated $145,000 to the initiative, taking her contribution up to $325,000.
As a joint community venture between Delfin Lend Lease and Gold Coast City Council, this one of a kind community sports facility is set to benefit the 10,000 plus Gold Coast residents who already use Lake Orr each year.
Lend Lease Project Director Carl Bruhn said the Sports House fundraising event showed the community's support of the project, stating "we are thrilled to accept a second substantial donation from Councillor Grew, and wish to thank her for demonstrating her ongoing commitment to this project.
"Our fundraising evening held in the Lake Orr Community Meeting Room at Varsity Lakes received a fantastic amount of support with many representatives from local and corporate businesses attending.
"The Sports House at Varsity Lakes will provide a world-class community sport and recreation hub for Varsity Lakes, the surrounding areas and the entire Gold Coast region.
"We are now only $120,000 away from our fundraising goal, and we are encouraging other local businesses and individuals to throw their support behind Sports House by making a tax deductible donation."
Bruhn believes that said the Varsity Lakes Sports House will be a lasting legacy for the community, adding "Delfin Lend Lease has always been committed to delivering facilities back to the local residents, and the Sports House will provide a great facility for the broader community, offering recreational areas through to storage facilities and meeting rooms.
"This innovative new model of community infrastructure aims to support and enhance active participation through sustainable sport and recreation programs and events."
Tax deductible donations to support Sports House can be made to the Australian Sports Foundation (ASF) by either individuals or businesses.
When completed, the Varsity Lakes Sports House will provide over 1800 metre2 of facilities including boat launching, community meeting spaces, watercraft storage and offices for sports administration and will be managed by VLCL for the Gold Coast City Council. Construction on Stage One of the Varsity Lakes Sports House is expected to be completed by mid 2011, with the entire project due for completion in late September.
Varsity Lakes will comprise 4,500 homes upon projected completion in 2011 and up to 100,000-square metres of commercial space in town centre Varsity Central. It will become home to more than 10,000 residents and more than 6,500 employees.
Varsity Lakes is being developed by Delfin Lend Lease, Australia's largest developer of master planned communities, with 26 projects nationally.
