Coronavirus Update: Bondi Beach, Christchurch, Mass Gatherings, Social Distancing in Gyms and Jobs - 21st March

After images emerged yesterday of beachgoers on Bondi Beach ignoring social distancing measures, the landmark beach has today been closed by the NSW Government and Waverley City Council officials. Reports suggest other beaches with crowds of 500 will also be closed.

Christchurch City Council is closing down all its community facilities from 4pm on Saturday 21st March.

This means there will be no public access to libraries, sport and recreation centres, pools, community centres, service centres, the Christchurch Art Gallery and the visitors’ centre in the Botanic Gardens until further notice.

Fitness Australia has created a number of resources for use in clubs, gyms and studios in alignment with its recommendations for fitness facility operations.

Malaysia has announced some of the most far-reaching measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, which includes a “comprehensive restriction on movements and public gatherings”.

The country’s control order, which began Wednesday and last until the end of the month, includes a ban on sports, religious, social and cultural activities.

Due to the escalation of Coronavirus, all upcoming Parks and Leisure Australia events have been postponed up until 31st May 2020.

Tourism Industry Aotearoa is urging the New Zealand Government to consider adopting the latest business and job support measures announced by the UK Government, whose Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme allows any UK employer to apply for a grant to cover 80% of the wages of staff who are not working but are furloughed and kept on payroll, rather than being laid off.
