Christchurch City Council forms company to manage stadium project
Christchurch City Council is seeking directors for a new company that will oversee the development of the South Island city’s proposed new 25,000-seat stadium.
A job posting stated that the company will build the stadium, located in the heart of the city, advising that it is envisaged enabling works will commence this year, construction in 2021 and completion by 2024.
The Council is seeking expressions of interest from potential directors for the inaugural board of the company. The listing, which has a deadline of 14th February, said successful applicants for the non-executive roles will need “governance experience, be a strategic thinker and an active participant around the board table, with a solid appreciation of project governance best practice”.
It added "this is a unique opportunity for suitably experienced and passionate candidates to work on a significant project helping re-establish Christchurch as a sporting and cultural capital while boosting the city’s economy by attracting visitors from around New Zealand and the world.”
The investment case for the new multi-purpose stadium, the last of the anchor projects in the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan, was approved in December.
Expected to cost $473 million to build, the Council is putting $253 million towards the project, while the New Zealand Government will contribute $220 million from the Christchurch Regeneration Acceleration Facility towards the costs.
Councillors are currently discussing the next steps for roofed stadium funding, with a final agreement expected no later than 2nd March.
