Convention to bring together youth-led organisations

Federal Minister for Youth Kate Ellis today announced that the Rudd Government will fund a convention for Australia's youth-led organisations to share and build their expertise.

Minister Ellis (pictured) stated that "youth-led organisations play a vital role in facilitating youth development and promoting the physical, mental and social wellbeing of young Australians.

"It's important that young leaders get the chance to share their knowledge with other organisations, build valuable skills and learn from each other.

"The idea behind the Youth-Led Convention is to help equip our youth leaders with the skills and knowledge they need to grow their organisations and improve the lives of Australian young people."

The Federal Government will partner with an organisation in the youth sector to deliver the event in Canberra in July.

The Youth-Led Convention will be one of a number of partnership activities between the Australian Government and the youth sector in 2010.

The convention will include workshops, presentations and networking opportunities with representatives from youth-led organisations and the Government.

Participants will have the opportunity to contribute to workshops on youth issues and share their knowledge within the sector and with the Australian Government.

Miniser Ellis added "the Youth-Led Convention will bring together organisations from across Australia, providing a great platform for youth leaders to build networks and discuss issues.

"The Australian Government is committed to supporting these organisations and ensuring all young Australians have the opportunity to realise their full potential."

The Youth-led Convention is being announced during National Youth Week as part of the first ever National Strategy for Young Australians.

The strategy is a guide for future Australian Government action to encourage and help young people take charge of their own lives. It highlights eight priority areas for Government action.

The strategy is the latest step in the Rudd Governmentâs ongoing commitment to giving young people a voice and will help guide future government policy.
