Contract awarded to build Dunedin’s new $15 million Mosgiel Pool

Dunedin City Council (DCC) has awarded the contract to build the new $15 million Mosgiel Pool to Dunedin company Cook Brothers Construction.Building is expected to commence in June 2021 with the new facility opening to bathers in September 2022. The pool will be built on land adjacent to the current pool site at the western end of Memorial Park.

The new pool is a joint project between DCC and the Taieri Community Facilities Trust, which was first proposed more than eight years ago. The trust is contributing $4 million towards the $15.5 million build.

The design will include an eight-lane main pool and hydrotherapy, toddler’s, learn to swim and spa pools. Facilities will include family and accessible changing rooms and a meeting/multiuse space for community use. The new facility will be open all year round compared to the current pool which is open seven months of the year.

Mayor of Dunedin, Aaron Hawkins says, “We’re pleased to see this large project come to fruition. The complex will include all the water spaces the community wants and needs and is a wonderful example of how a community/Council partnership can bring about the best outcome for the city.

“We were impressed with the successful tenderer’s design, which was developed with community need in mind and Taieri Community Facilities Trust input throughout the process.”

The Chair of the Taieri Community Facilities Trust Irene Mosley advises “the Trust is delighted to get this project underway. We will now work to complete the last of the fundraising and hand responsibility for the building project to the DCC. This is a good outcome for our community.”

The Regional Manager of Cook Brothers Construction Blair McGill adds “we are thrilled to be the DCC’s contractor of choice for the new Mosgiel Pool for the Mosgiel community. It will be an important leisure facility built by local people for local people to use and enjoy for years to come.”

The current pool will be demolished prior to construction commencing, and so the current 2020-21 season will be its last.
