Contract awarded for new Rockhampton pool

Rockhampton's new Southside Memorial Swimming Pool has moved a step closer, with the award of the design and construction contract for the $3.3 million project.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh and Member for Rockhampton Robert Schwarten announced Hutchinson Builders have been awarded the contract, stating "Rockhampton residents are on track to get a brand new Olympic competition standard pool later this year.

"The new 50 metre, 10 lane heated pool will be a state-of-the-art competition and recreational aquatic facility.

"It's the final stage of the $21.1 million Rockhampton Riverbank Redevelopment which will help to revitalise Rockhampton's riverfront precinct.

"The State Government has contributed $5 million to this redevelopment and it reflects our commitment to help Rockhampton residents rebuild after the devastating summer floods."

Premier Bligh said Stage One of the Rockhampton Riverbank Redevelopment included a new recreation playground area, two fishing platforms, pathways to the Fitzroy Bridge and car parking for the Bowls Club.

"Stage Two included a boat ramp and floating walkway, a third fishing platform and a new amenities block.

"It also included upgraded car parking, basketball court upgrade and shade structures to the play area."

Robert Schwarten said a new Olympic competition standard pool was in hot demand among local residents, adding "this new swimming pool will provide a wonderful competition and recreation aquatic facility for the Rocky community and its surrounding areas.

"It's one of the final stages in the Rockhampton Riverbank Redevelopment project which I have been heavily involved in and it's pleasing to see it all coming to fruition.

"This redevelopment is about encouraging and supporting increased use and interest in the area and this new pool will make the precinct an even better place for locals to visit."

Premier Bligh said the new pool would be a great new asset for the local community

"This new pool will make a very significant contribution to sporting facilities in the Region and will be the only FINA compliant swimming pool outside Brisbane attracting athletes throughout Queensland."

The development is expected to be completed by the end of 2011.
