Community input wanted on Brighton pools plan

The local community is being asked to take part in the next stage of the New Brighton hot salt water pools development.

Development Christchurch Limited (DCL), working alongside Christchurch City Council, has listened to the community and come up with ideas for upgrading the existing whale pool playground and developing a hot salt water pool facility.

Both projects are based on community feedback provided during the New Brighton Suburban Master Plan process, the Council’s Long Term Plan and ongoing community-led local engagement.

DCL Chief Executive Rob Hall explains “we now need to hear back from local residents and community groups to make sure we’re on the right track.

“The ideas are limited to high-level play and pool concepts at this stage so the community can truly influence the final design. Feedback from local residents and the wider community will ensure the city makes the best decisions about the future of New Brighton.”

Work on the new, substantially enlarged play area and hot salt water pools is just one part of the wider programme of regeneration happening in New Brighton.

Hall adds “this development needs to fit in with other community initiatives, plans for the revitalisation of the commercial centre of the suburb, the implementation of the Master Plan, work to understand future environmental issues, and the wider regeneration of the New Brighton area.”

The Council has supported initial plans for the play and pools development, and asked DCL to push ahead with community engagement. Feedback will inform further work on the project and more detailed planning of the play and pool concepts, which are expected to be presented to the Council for consideration by the end of the year.

Hall says care is being taken to ensure plans for New Brighton are complementary to other Council developments in the area, like the Eastern Recreation and Sport Centre at QEII.
