Coffs Harbour's Pool Upgrade Reopens on time and on budget
The major upgrade of the Coffs Harbour War Memorial Olympic Pool has been completed and the facility has reopened.
The $5.4 million upgrade includes outdoor and indoor solar-heated pools, a new kiosk, new change rooms and a splash pad for children.
The project manager for the redevelopment, Jason Bailey, says the old pool was losing thousands of gallons of water through leaks, and it had to be upgraded, stating “the old pool facility didn't meet a lot of requirements as far as health turnover rates and also it was leaking quite substantially.
"The refurbishment as far as bringing that into line has been really important."
Based on a design brief by Facility Design Group Architects, the project involved:
• Renovation of the 50 metre pool to FINA length standards with wet deck collection gutters;
• New soiled water and filtered water reticulation to the 50 metre pool;
• New compliant sand filtration plant for the 50 metre pool;
• New multi-function indoor heated 25 metre pool and plant;
• A children's splash pad with interactive water toys;
• Modernising of changerooms, management and kiosk facilities;
• Concrete grand stand seating; and
• A mix of modern shade structures.
Swimplex Aquatics won the 'design and construct' tender based on the use of the Myrtha Pool RenovAction® technology system.
The technology consists of pre-engineering the pool from Stainless Steel panels with a durable heat bonded PVC surface.
As Mark McLaughlin of Swimplex Aquatics explains,"there are over 60 Myrtha commercial pools now in Australia," adding that "this project will follow on from our success in renovating municipal pool sites at Orange, Forbes, Cobar, Young and Port Pirie."
Work on the project began just after Easter this year and were completed at the end of last month in time for the start of the summer swimming season.
Bailey was delighted that the project was completed on time and on budget, adding “the end result for the community is that they're going to have a fantastic aquatic facility.
"It's going to be available all year round and can cater to a really wide cross section of community needs.”
