Christchurch’s Avon River Corridor identified as suitable location for outdoor events

With demand for large outdoor event space in Christchurch continuing to grow, Christchurch City Council has advised that Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor will be used for events this summer.

An area of the OARC, to be referred to as Sector 7, between Locksley Avenue and New Brighton Road, has been identified as a suitable location for events for approximately 5000 people.

Events will be held at the site this summer as part of a trial to see if the space is suitable for use over the next few years.

Nigel Cox, Head of Recreation, Sports & Events, says the city is experiencing high demand for event space, with current outdoor event sites proving extremely popular.

Cox advised “we are receiving requests from event organisers and promoters to hold amazing events in our city, and we are struggling to provide enough space.

“Hagley Park is at capacity, so we have worked with our Red Zone team, noise control, and other units in Council to identify a new area that is suitable for events.

“This trial is a great opportunity to activate the greenspace right on our doorstep, help to shift the perception of the red zone, bring people to the area and to provide awesome events for our community.”

Cox added that the area has previously been successfully used for smaller events and using the space will be positive for the local community, who have asked for events to be held, and for Christchurch residents who want access to more events.

The space in the OARC has been chosen for its suitability based on the history of events using the site, accessibility for event goers, and considerations of noise on the surrounding area.

“By doing this, we can prioritise the larger spaces such as Hagley Park for the events which require more room for big crowds.

“We have put plans in place to reduce impact on residents, the ground and surrounding wildlife, however these impacts will be monitored at each event to determine suitability of the site for events.”

Events held at the site will finish by 10.30pm and will be supervised by Council staff.

Residents will be notified via letter drop of event details and what to expect ahead of time.

A traffic management plan for Sector 7 will aim to ensure event visitors have access to the site without significant impact on local road users.

Public parking is not available on-site, and attendees are encouraged to plan to use alternative transport when traveling to the site.
