Chengdu’s Tianfu Olympic Sports Park to get new investment for 2025 World Games hosting

Having successfully hosted this year's FISU Summer World University Games, the Chinese city of Chengdu is to benefit from new investment for its hosting of the 2025 World Games multi-sport event.

More than CNY¥ 7bn (US$955 million) is set to be invested into the development of the Tianfu Olympic Sports Park, which spans an area of around 86 kilometres² in the Eastern New District of the city of 16 million people in the Sichuan province.

Chinese news website Sohu reported that the investment is for five projects, including the development of a CNY¥3.2bn Commercial Service Industrial Park, which will be used to attract conferences and exhibitions, along with a 40-hectare Sports Medicine Industrial Park which has a comparable budget.

Other investments include CNY¥220 million (US$30 million) into the Sancha Lake International Marathon Track and CNY¥200 million (US$27 million) into an Olympic Sports Cultural Tourism Centre.

A further CNY¥200 million is also set to go towards the Sancha Lake International Water Sports Center that is expected to help with the development of sports including rowing and stand-up paddleboarding.

The city is currently undergoing a transformation in an attempt to position itself as one of China’s leading sports destinations.

Nearly 10,000 athletes and officials participated in the recent FISU World University Summer Games, which concluded last month in Chengdu.

Most of the competitions took place at other venues in the city, including the Chengdu Fenghuangshan Football Stadium.

The World Games are due to be held in Chengdu from 7th to 15th August 2025.

Meanwhile, the 19th Asian Games are set to be staged in Hangzhou from 23rd September to 8th October.
