CERM celebrates 21 years of industry partnerships

The close of 2011 marked 21 years of industry partnering between public aquatic and leisure facilities in Australia and New Zealand and the CERM Performance Indicators (CERM PI) project within the Centre for Tourism & Leisure Management, School of Management at the University of South Australia (UniSA).

An applied research project UniSA, CERM PI currently provides reviews for over 200 sports and leisure facilities in Australia and New Zealand while, over its 21 years, the CERM PI annual operational management survey has been the basis for the development of robust operational benchmarks for sports and leisure facilities. These benchmarks foster a self-assessment framework and have contributed to a continuous improvement culture within many organisations.

Initiated in 1990 with a vision to facilitate quality management in the leisure industry, CERM PI initially collaborated with the managers of local government indoor aquatic, recreation and sport centres. Subsequently the project expanded to included a range of leisure industry sectors and in partner ship with university colleagues in Australia, New Zealand, USA, Taiwan and the UK.

Working with industry partners, CERM PI has compiled a range of performance indicators for operational management, customer service quality and appropriateness of services.

The performance indicators and related demographic data allow for improved operational decision making, including internal and external benchmarking against similar operations.

Potential industry partners can obtain more details on, or be part of, CERM PI research by contacting Associate Professor Gary Howat, Co-Director of the Centre for Tourism & Leisure Management, School of Management, University of South Australia.
