Centennial Park Trustees welcome NSW Government assurance to preserve Moore Park

After speculation that the NSW Government might back the construction of a new sport stadium on open space within Sydney’s Moore Park, the announcement last week that funds will be used for a redevelopment of Allianz Stadium has been welcomed by the Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust.

The Trust, along with local residents, had been vocal opponents of the potential additional stadium advanced by pro-development lobbyists and media interests.

Trust Chairman Tony Ryan released a statement that explained, “the Trustees of the Centennial Park and Moore Park Trust commend the NSW Premier and his Government on the announcement of potential stadium investments, and the decision to preserve green space, public access and recreational facilities at Moore Park.

“Good sense and reason has prevailed. The Trustees have worked hard to ensure the ongoing protection of remaining open space in Moore Park and Friday’s Cabinet decision has endorsed this position.

“The decision means that if the Sydney Football Stadium - Allianz Stadium - is redeveloped or rebuilt, it must be done on existing land owned by the Sydney Cricket and Sports Ground Trust. This will result in no loss of existing open space.

“The Trust also notes that any upgrades are subject to a final business case, design and content agreements with the sporting codes.”

“We look forward to working with the NSW Government on these plans, and look to resolve the range of existing issues in the Moore Park precinct, notably, traffic congestion, public access, parking and public transport.”

“As we approach the 150th anniversary of Moore Park, it is imperative that we continue to work closely with the community on planning for the future of this public space.”
