Canberra zoo opens new African-themed resort

New guest accommodation at the National Zoo and Aquarium in Canberra gives guests the opportunity to get up close with the attraction’s animals.

The new African-themed Jamala Wildlife Lodge, Canberra’s first all inclusive luxury lodge accommodation, offers the uShaka Lodge, the Giraffe Treehouses and Jungle Bungalows, each with their own wildlife experience.

The 20 luxury rooms are scattered across the attraction, each with their own animal encounter and decorated with items handpicked by the owners Richard and Maureen Tindale Tindales on their annual trips to Africa.

The jungle bungalows sit in the lion, bear or cheetah enclosures, the giraffe treehouses offer the chance to hand-feed giraffes from the balcony, and the Ushaka Lodge houses up to 26 guests, is built around an aquarium and monkey enclosure, and has its own lounge and dining area, pool, plus access to feed the sharks.

At the heart of the project, Richard Tindale said the Lodge was part of a plan to educate the public on what they could do to help the animal world.

Tindale told The Canberra Times “the idea here is to try and get people immersed in the world of wildlife in a luxurious and fairly unique setting.”

The Jamala Wildlife Lodge experience also  includes two exclusive tours for lodge guests designed to allow guests the opportunity to meet as many animals as possible, including lions, tigers, cheetahs, brown bears, sun bears, otters, meerkats and rhinos.

Just 10 minutes from the centre of Canberra, the attraction is Australia’s only combined zoo and aquarium.
