Cairns Waterpark Project Approved
The Adventure Waters waterpark development has received approval from the Cairns Regional Council.
The $35 million development, to be built at Smithfield, 12 kilometrres north of the city, is now set to begin construction in May next year, at the end of the North Queensland wet season.
Completion is scheduled for April 2011, Adventure Waters Chief Executive Paul Freebody having recently met with key industry consultants to put building schedules in place and start preparation works.
Plans for Adventure Waters include 16 water slides, a surf simulator, pools and lagoons as well as restaurants, shops and function rooms with development to be undertaken in two stages.
Paul Freebody, said that the council's decision was "fantastic."
Speaking of the approval Councillor Margaret Cochrane of Cairns Regional Council explained that "the developer has done all the work in the planning stages with respect to creating an environmentally sound recreational facility with sensitivity to the surrounding agricultural land.
"It is currently a derelict site and this plan will give it new life as a functioning economically viable and sustainable facility for locals and tourists alike.
"The plans for this theme park have been long in the making and it is time to get on with the job of creating the reality - and having some fun."
