BYO to end at Perth sport venues

The Western Australian Government has introduced new regulations that makes taking liquor into major Perth sporting arenas an offence.

Explaining the news regulations, which will take effect from 5th September, Western Australian Racing and Gaming Minister Terry Waldron stated "this offence applies to any sports arena that has been prescribed in the regulations for the purposes of section 110 of the Act (the Liquor Control Act 1988).

"The regulations have been amended to include 10 high-profile Perth sporting arenas, to be known as prescribed venues."

The changes are to the Liquor Control Regulations 1989 with amendments to the Liquor Control Act 1988 which make it an offence for a person to bring liquor into a prescribed sports arena, without the licensee's consent.

Minister Waldron stated that the move comes after the Western Australian Government's Department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor consulted closely with the operators of the venues involved, adding "all stakeholders showed a willingness to have their venues on a prescribed sporting arena list as one way of addressing alcohol-related, antisocial behaviour at their arenas."

The prescribed sporting arenas are:

• Patersons Stadium (Subiaco Oval)
• nib Stadium
• WACA ground
• Ascot Racecourse
• Belmont Park Racecourse
• Gloucester Park
• Challenge Stadium
• Arena Joondalup
• Perth Motorplex
• Cannington Greyhounds.

Minister Waldron said he expected other sporting venue operators to apply to the Department to have their venues added to the list.
