Bunbury arts scene to benefit from $9.97 million entertainment centre expansion
Western Australia's Bunbury region is to benefit from the expansion of the Bunbury Regional Entertainment Centre (BREC), a $9.97 million project that will enable a more diverse range of cultural events and provide conference, function and meeting room facilities.
Western Australian Premier Colin Barnett said the project would allow for increased social and cultural involvement by the community and deliver an economic boost to the hospitality industry, stating "there is a clear need within the community for improved facilities, both for cultural performances and for business-related functions. The expansion of the entertainment centre will bring further employment opportunities to the South-West region.
"The expansion will increase the use of the existing centre and provide new amenities, such as smaller performance spaces and a venue to house functions and major events.
"The creation of conference and meeting room facilities will ensure businesses, organisations and community groups can hold functions in the region.
"I would also like to acknowledge the City of Bunbury and the South West Development Commission for their ongoing co-operation in making this project a reality."
The Western Australian Government's Royalties for Regions program is contributing to the project, with $5 million in funding from the Regional Capital Works Initiative and $2.47 million from the Country Local Government Fund groupings component.
Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls added that the funding had been allocated based on local decision making, "this project is one example of how the Royalties for Regions, the South West Development Commission and local government are working together to provide the community with better facilities and services."
The BREC is council-owned and run by Bunbury Regional Theatre on behalf of the City of Bunbury.
