Brisbane South Bank recognised as sustainability leader

Brisbane's South Bank is the first Australian precinct to be recognised for its sustainability credentials under a global environmental certification program.

EarthCheck Certification, awarded through EC3 Global's EarthCheck Certified Program, positions South Bank as a world-leading, sustainable precinct - one of only four EarthCheck Certified communities in the world.

To achieve Certified status, the South Bank precinct was measured and benchmarked against a wide range of performance criteria which was verified by a third party auditor and then compared to similar communities worldwide.

EarthCheck Certified status, which follows the South Bank Corporation's Bronze Benchmarked achievement in 2011 and included a rigorous assessment process, adds to the Corporation's other sustainability initiatives such as Rain Bank.

Achieving certification demonstrates that most key elements of South Bank, including waste and water management, tourism and energy consumption are at or above industry best practice levels for sustainability.

EarthCheck Chief Executive Stewart Moore commended the Corporation for its achievement and ongoing commitment to sustainability, stating "through this certification South Bank is now part of an international network of communities and precincts who are daring to make a difference.

"This includes world famous communities such as Kaikoura in New Zealand, which is renowned for its marine biodiversity and habitat conservation through to Huatulco Bays in Mexico and Snaefellsness in Iceland who have been successful in preserving their heritage and culture and providing more sustainable environments for their local communities."

The South Bank community is defined as the public areas and streetscapes under the control of the South Bank Corporation.
