Brisbane International match interrupted by eastern brown snake on court

Play at the Brisbane International was temporarily halted when today when fans spotted an eastern brown snake on the court.

Former US Open champion Dominic Thiem’s match against Australian youngster James McCabe was interrupted when the deadly snake entered on to Show Court 2 at the Queensland Tennis Centre forcing the suspension of play.

Security staff were called in, before a snake catcher arrived to capture the 50cm eastern brown – removing it from the venue, before play resumed.

After the march, Thiem told AAP "I really love animals, especially exotic ones.

"But they said it was a really poisonous snake and it was close to the ball kids, so it was a really dangerous situation.

"It's something that has never happened to me and it's something I'll definitely never forget."
