All-star line-up serves up record Brisbane International 2014
Queensland's capital has served up a great start to 2014 with the Brisbane International welcoming a record attendance of 105,730 across the eight-day tournament.
Explaining that the tournament, now in its fourth year, had grown to become a summer spectacular on the Brisbane event calendar, Queensland Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Jann Stuckey stated "the success of the Brisbane International 2014 further cements the tournament's reputation as a premier event on the world tennis circuit, providing visitors with another great reason to kick-off the New Year in Queensland.
"This year's tournament boasted an outstanding field with the combined star power of tennis talent including Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Victoria Azarenka proving to be a major drawcard to popular event.
"In addition to the record crowds in Brisbane, this premier tournament showcased the multitude of experiences on offer in Queensland, placing the state top of mind for global travellers."
Minister Stuckey said the tournament simultaneously finished off a major year of Brisbane events while kick-starting the 2014 calendar with a blockbuster event.
The Minister added "the Brisbane International joins a dynamic calendar of events for the city in 2014 including the Channel Seven Brisbane Racing Carnival, Cai Guo-Qiang: Falling Back to Earth exhibition, Brisbane Festival, Australian Performing Arts Market and the American Ballet debut in 2014.
"The Queensland Government is proud to support the 2014 event through Tourism and Events Queensland as part of its goal to increase annual overnight visitor expenditure to $30 billion by 2020."
Meanwhile, in Perth crowd numbers dipped by around 20% for the 2014 Hopman Cup.
