Brisbane City Council opens first free outdoor gym
Brisbane City Council has opened its first free outdoor gym at Minnippi Parklands in the city’s south-east.
The $220,000 project features a 15 station gym, multi-use games court and shade structure with the exercise equipment including a 'green energy' recumbent bike that generates electricity allowing the users to charge their mobile phones, iPads or tablets while exercising.
Introducing the outdoor gym, Doboy ward Councillor Ryan Murphy explained “this is the pilot site and we want to evaluate how this one goes.”
Murphy suggested that such facilities had been widely implemented across the United Kingdom, where they had resulted in an average 20 per cent reduction in childhood obesity in the surrounding communities.
Park activation has been a key aim of Brisbane City Council in recent year, with outdoor exercise equipment joining such initiatives as all-abilities play equipment, free deck chairs and Wi-Fi in the city’s public parks.
Equipment used in the outdoor gym at Minnippi Parklands was supplied by The Great Outdoor Gym Company.
