Brighton to host 2015 Great Australia Day Swim

Brighton on Melbourne’s Port Phiilip Bay will again be hosting its Great Australia Day Swim on Monday 26th January.

The annual carnival raises tens of thousands of dollars for Brighton Rotary projects, staging the following swim events:

• 1400 metre Open Water Swim – a clockwise course around the Middle Brighton pier and breakwater from the pier to the Finish gate on the beach
• 5 kilometre Open Water Swim – a more challenging course around a marked circuit, finishing around the breakwater to the beach
• 650 metre Intermediate Swim – a shorter course from the Northern end of the Royal Brighton Yacht Club marina to the beach
• Swimland Junior Dash – a 300 metre swim from the landing on the Middle Brighton Pier to the beach for 10 to 12 year olds, and a shorter course for 8 and 9 year olds

The event concludes with The Brighton Challenge invitation relay, from the beach in front of the Yacht Club

Great Australia Day Swim Director Stuart McIntyre said while swimmers would have a lot of fun, it was also a great event to watch.

McIntyre explained “over 1000 swimmers will participate in open water events around the pier, breakwater and marina, which will provide a spectacular vantage point for spectators.

“There will be live entertainment and food stalls on the concourse in front of Middle Brighton Baths.

“It is a great way to celebrate Australia Day.”

The event is backed by learn-to-swim operator Paul Sadler Swimland.

The Great Australia Day Swim is on Monday 26th January at Middle Brighton Baths, with registration starting at 7.45am.
