Boxer dies days after Sydney title fight

Professional boxer David Browne Junior, who was knocked unconscious during a boxing title fight at the Ingleburn RSL club on Friday night (11th September), has died in hospital.

The 28-year-old was competing in a 12-round bout for a super featherweight title when, 30 seconds into the final round, he was knocked to the canvas by his opponent, Filipino featherweight boxer Carlo Magali.

Browne Jr was treated at the scene by a doctor and paramedics, before he was taken to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition.

Having been in coma since Friday he died in the early hours of this morning when his family made the decision to turn off his life support.

National Boxing Federation President John McDougall said the news had "hit all in the boxing game".

McDougall told the ABC "on behalf of everybody connected in boxing nationwide, we offer our sympathies, our prayers, our thoughts to Davey's wife and children."

McDougall, who saw Browne Jr fall in front of him, said a lot of thought had gone into the last round and "Davey was keen to see the fight out".

He added "the doctor was seated below Davey's corner and he obviously had no reservations in letting the fight continue.

"Regrettably we now know it's easy in hindsight to say it shouldn't have happened.

"In this case it's a tragic passing of a young family man.

McDougall said the Federation would also make every effort support Magali.

He concluded "I just couldn't say enough how much the industry feels for everyone connected, not leaving out his cornerman and trainer and the referee who I know how they'd be feeling at this stage.

"It's just a tragic accident in sport."

The death comes just just a week after The Australian Medical Association extended its previous objections relating the safety of boxers to all combat sports, calling for the prohibition of all forms of combat sport for people under the age of 18.
