Boom period for concerts at Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium
Dunedin's Forsyth Barr Stadium is set to host a potential 150,000 music fans at six major music concerts over an upcoming six-month period.
Pop superstar Robbie Williams and former Pink Floyd member Roger Waters are the latest acts to announce that they will be playing at the venue - in February and January respectively – making the covered Dunedin venue their only New Zealand South Island shows.
Ed Sheeran will also be playing three dates at the venue in March/April, while singer-songwriter Stevie Nicks, who played the venue with Fleetwood Mac in 2015, is booked to play in November.
Dunedin Venues Management Ltd (DVML) Marketing and Communication Manager Kim Barnes said it would be the busiest period for concerts since the venue opened in 2011.
Barnes told Fairfax NZ that the six concerts were "a terrific acknowledgement" of how well the stadium and company were doing, suggesting that a potential 150,000 fans could attend the six events.
With previous concerts showing that almost 60% of concertgoers came from outside of Dunedin, Barnes suggested “we would conservatively estimate an injection of $50 million into the local economy.
She said DVML had worked to position itself as the main South Island venue for concerts, with other New Zealand shows going to Auckland, adding “we have established and proved ourselves and with the support of fans in the south we will continue to be aggressive in the market to secure shows under the roof."
Despite initial doubts Forsyth Barr Stadium would attract concerts, the venue had "to show we have the ability to deliver and also that shows will be supported.
"And we are thrilled that we are achieving this on both fronts."
Mindful of the success of the Dunedin venue, both Christchurch and Wellington are planning new indoor concert arenas.
