Bondi Beach dedicated as a National Surfing Reserve

Sydney’s famous Bondi Beach has been recognised as one of Australia’s top surfing destinations during its dedication as a National Surfing Reserve (NSR).

NSW Minister for Lands and Forestry Paul Toole said the recognition secured Bondi’s reputation as one of the state’s most valuable Crown assets, stating “I’m very pleased that this world-class surf beach has gained the recognition it deserves.

“Bondi is the most visited beach in Australia and is now the 10th site in NSW to be dedicated as a NSR.

“Since 2006, when Maroubra was named Australia’s first NSR, beaches right along the NSW coast have been recognised for their intrinsic environmental, sporting and cultural value to this country.

“The NSW Government is committed to ensuring all our Crown land reserves, including our wonderful beaches, are managed for the benefit of the community now and into the future.”

Bondi National Surfing Reserve Steering Committee Secretary John Sullivan said the declaration would cement the beach’s status as the cultural capital of surfing in Australia and further enhance its recognition internationally.

He added that about “70% of overseas tourists come to Australia for the beaches and I think Bondi is emblematic of what an Australian beach is.

“Bondi is our most egalitarian and multicultural beach and leads the country in terms of diversity.”

National Surfing Reserves are 'iconic' places of intrinsic environmental, heritage, sporting and cultural value to a nation.

The NSW Department of Industry - Crown Lands & Water created the Bondi National Surfing Reserve via Government Gazette notification on 10th November 2017.
