Lismore City Council commences sustainable Christmas celebrations

Lismore City Council has unveiled its ‘sustainable city’ Christmas tree, marking the start of a month-long series of festive activations for community and business.

It is the ninth year Lismore’s upcycled Christmas tree is being displayed on the corner of the city’s Keen and Magellan streets.

Advising that tree is a gift from Council staff to the community, Lismore City Council General Manager, Jon Gibbons explained “since 2015, it has become an annual tradition that Council give the community a upcycled tree to encourage people to think not only about recycling, but about upcycling which involves the creative reuse of materials to give them a second life.

”This year’s rainbow-themed tree features hundreds of upcycled PET bottles which were sourced from the MRF at the Recycling & Recovery Centre and staff donations.

Lismore City Council’s Martin Soutar, who led this year’s team, said the project was supported by an incredibly collaborative approach of staff from different areas of Council.

Soutar noted “the tree is more than a festive decoration, it is our own contribution to backing Lismore, a gift to local business and community, crafted by teams in their own time.”
