BK’s Gymnastics opens new Sydney facility at the Heffron Centre

BK’s Gymnastics has officially opened its new children’s gymnastics facility at the community sporting hub, Heffron Centre in the eastern Sydney suburb of Maroubra.

BK’s Gymnastics Heffron Centre offers extensive programs from beginner level to athlete. There will be a range of recreational gymnastics programs for toddlers through to teenagers, a Ninja Stars offering and holiday programs for children aged 4+. Meanwhile, the BK’s All-Star Academy will offer competitive programs for individuals and teams.

BK’s Gymnastics Heffron Centre is part of the Belgravia Group, which aims to get one million children across Australia active each year.

Belgravia Group Executive Director Alex Lord said they were excited to invite the community into the new facility and contribute to a boost in participation for the sport of gymnastics in NSW.

Lord advised “the latest Ausplay data shows that participation rates for children in gymnastics in New South Wales are lower compared to Victoria and Queensland. The participation rate for boys is also down. In 2018-19 we saw the rates for boys hit 5.7% but the latest data shows that rate sitting at only 4.8%. In Queensland, that rate is 8.3%.

“This club features the latest equipment, expert coaches and a fun learning pathway through the sport that will hopefully inspire more children to take part.

“The initial response has been really strong - we had over 350 expressions of interest from families before the doors opened. We can’t wait for the next generation of gymnasts to thrive in this facility – some that we may even see compete at the Brisbane Olympics 2032.”

Former Olympic gymnast Brennon Dowrick OAM said the new gymnastics centre would be a wonderful addition to Sydney and the sport and shared “we need great centres like this to encourage, support and nurture children through the sport because this is where the passion starts, with young kids in local communities like this.

"My gymnastics career started at the age of seven at a recreational club where we would help set up and pack away our gym apparatus at every training session. Thankfully clubs are more organised now and most are permanently set up, however the passion of the coaches and the club was what really helped me fall in love with the sport.

“To have professional clubs such as BK’s Gymnastics at Heffron Centre allows more young people to enjoy this wonderful sport. I love to see so many children growing our great sport and experiencing all the health benefits of gymnastics.”

Lord added “the opening of this new site puts us another step closer to reaching our goal. We want to make a difference to the health and wellbeing of Australian kids and help them develop a love of movement that will last a lifetime. With engaging and supportive environments like BK’s Gymnastics Heffron Centre, we can positively influence a significant number of children.”
