Badminton abandons skirt ruling

World badminton administrators have abandoned their controversial ruling forcing women to play in skirts or dresses.

The regulation was due to come into force as of 1st June but has been shelved after causing uproar within the game.

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) hoped the rule would help glamorise the sport but it was forced to put back its implementation from May to June after a deluge of complaints.

The Federation says it will continue to look at the issue of clothing and consider further ways it can improve the presentation of the sport. Its scope will be broadened to include the men's game and a new proposal will be presented in December.

The BWF had been branded as sexist, and many women simply preferred to have the choice between playing in skirts or shorts.
