Baby gorilla due at Melbourne Zoo

Victorians will soon be welcoming the first baby gorilla to the Melbourne Zoo family in 14 years.

Western Lowland Gorilla Kimya is expected to give birth to her first baby in 2015.

Keepers are optimistic the pregnancy and birth will go well as the first-time mum has watched and helped a number of her siblings as they grow up.

Melbourne Zoo Primate Precinct Manager Harna Burton told AAP "we're all really excited.”

Victorian Minister for Environment and Climate Change Ryan Smith added "if all goes according to plan during the nine month pregnancy, Kimya is set to give birth around March next year.

"It is encouraging that supporting Kimya's pregnancy are Melbourne Zoo's veterinarians, curator and keepers who are world-leading experts in gorillas.

“It is still early days in her pregnancy, so we are cautiously optimistic about her progress and the Melbourne Zoo team are providing the best care to help her through this special time.”

The Victorian Government allows free entry to Zoos Victoria attractions on weekends, public and school holidays.

In July last year, Silverback Gorilla Rigo died of a heart attack at the Zoo.
