Ashfield Aquatic Centre redevelopment moves forward

Sydney’s Inner West Council has had its plans approved for the redevelopment of its 50-year old Ashfield Aquatic Centre.

The Sydney Eastern City Planning Panel gave the project the green light at the end of May, with a construction tender to be released in the coming weeks and construction set to begin in October.

With a budget now expanded to $31.5 million to cover features including a gym, spa, sauna and polo pool with a floating floor, concept designs for the new centre have been released by the Council.

• A new 50 metre outdoor pool with accessible ramp and moveable boom
• A new outdoor pool with floating floor that can change its depth, opening it up for a wide range of uses
• A new children’s leisure pool with landscaping and green wall
• An improved entrance with customer service area, change rooms, crèche and retail space
• A new health and fitness centre
• New community meeting room facilities
• A community green space and covered seating
• Landscaped areas and terraces for the external pools
• Increased parking spaces.

More than 11.5 million people have visited the centre since it opened in 1963.

The project is due for completion by mid-2020.
