Archibald Prize portrait exhibition makes its inaugural tour to Alice Springs

Australia’s renowned portrait exhibition - the Archibald Prize - has officially opened at the Araluen Arts Centre in Alice Springs, marking a major cultural highlight for the region and representing the first time in the prize’s 100-year history that the prestigious exhibition has toured to the Red Centre.

On tour from the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the exhibition features 57 portraits of notable Australians from all walks of life including artists, activists, sportspeople and community leaders, painted by some of the country’s most talented emerging and established artists.

Visitors will have the chance to see the 2024 Archibald Prize-winning portrait of Tim Winton by Laura Jones, along with the Packing Room Prize and People’s Choice Award winners, and a striking collection of works that capture the diversity and complexity of contemporary Australia.

The exhibition will be on display until 15th June 2025, offering a once in a generation opportunity for Territorians to see Australia’s most celebrated portraiture exhibition in Alice Springs.

The exhibition will also include finalists in the Young Archie Mparntwe competition, where visitors can admire the local talents of young Territorians across four age categories.

NT Department of People, Sport and Culture Chief Executive, Samantha Livesley enthused “the Archibald Prize is one of the country’s most iconic art events, and it’s incredibly exciting to see it here in the Red Centre.”

“This is an extraordinary opportunity for the Alice Springs community to engage with some of the most powerful and compelling portraiture in Australia.”

“We’re expecting thousands of visitors to pass through the gallery doors over the coming weeks – from school groups and families, to art lovers and tourists.”
