AIS Podium Project looks to deliver high-performance sport facilities for Canberra
The Australian Sports Commission (ASC) has announced a new name for the most significant upgrading of the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Campus in more than four decades.
The AIS Podium Project, formerly known as the AIS Site Redevelopment Project, is set to transform the Canberra Campus with the construction of three pivotal high-performance sport facilities.
The new facilities include a multi-storey accommodation building designed to house up to 200 residents, which will be fully accessible for athletes with disabilities.
Additionally, a spacious indoor Sport Dome will be established, providing 24 hour, all-weather training opportunities for track and field athletes, a critical advantage as they prepare for competitions.
Complementing these structures will be a state-of-the-art Testing and Training Centre, equipped with cutting-edge technology to monitor and enhance athlete performance and development.
Explaining that the initiative underscores a significant investment in the future of Australian sport, aiming to enhance the training landscape for athletes and support their journey to success on the world stage, an AIS spokesperson advised “these developments are not merely structural; they represent the core of a broader vision aimed at bolstering high-performance sport in Australia.”
The AIS Podium Project is the first stage in delivery of the broader AIS Campus Masterplan - the ASC’s long-term vision to ensure the AIS Campus continues to evolve as Australia’s world leading high performance sport precinct.
Key objectives of the AIS Campus Masterplan include:
Future-proofing the facilities at the AIS Campus to meet evolving sporting needs.
Strengthening Australia’s competitive position in international sport.
Creating supportive environments that prioritise athlete wellbeing and performance.
Promoting greater collaboration and innovation within the sport sector.
The ASC is committed to keeping stakeholders informed about the AIS Podium Project’s progress, with regular updates on construction milestones and insights regarding the integration of these facilities into the high-performance operations at the Campus.
