AIMMS Safety Summit confirms full schedule

The inaugural Australian Institute of Motorsport Safety (AIMSS) Motorsport Safety Summit has confirmed additional high profile guest speakers for its upcoming event.

Taking place on Tuesday 1st June, the virtual event will be the first of its kind in Australia with guests from both Australia and overseas to discuss the biggest safety issues and showcase the latest developments in the sport.

The Summit will feature international motor sport stars including Romain Grosjean, Mark Webber and Fernando Alonso, as well as Australian based names such as Paul Morris and Roland Dane, and will also include panel debates and live scenarios, promoting a two-way conversation between presenters and participants.

Set to be opened by Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) President Jean Todt, the Summit will also feature a keynote address from FIA Director of Safety Adam Baker, who will touch on areas such as global motorsport safety trends and where the FIA is heading with its research and new safety measures.

Originally from Melbourne, Baker studied engineering and law before beginning a career at Holden in 1998, working on high-performance road car projects for Holden Special Vehicles.

His time at Holden led him to his first motorsport role with parent company Tom Walkinshaw Racing just three years later where he worked in the NTT Indycar Series. Not long after that, Baker made the switch to Formula 1 working for teams such as Jordan and Jaguar.

A move to BMW in the German city of Munich saw him take on several roles over the next decade at BMW-Williams, BMW-Sauber, the Race and Test department for the F1 powertrain, BMW World Superbike team and the head of Powertrain Development at BMW Motorsport.

Before joining the FIA in his current role in 2018, Baker also spent five years responsible for the racing activities of all BMW Motorsport projects, including WEC, Formula E, and DTM.

With Baker just one of many experienced speakers to feature, AIMMS Chair, Garry Connelly believes the Summit would include information relevant to every individual involved with motorsport.

Connelly advised “I truly think this is an event not to be missed.

“Whether it be from a driver, official or event organiser’s perspective, there will be a lot to gain throughout the event and I highly recommend it.

“It’s not everyday people will have the opportunity to hear from individuals like this. Each speaker has extensive experience in motorsport and will be sharing stories and ways how safety plays a pivotal role in our sport.

“We are very fortunate to have people like Adam, Romain Grosjean and Fernando Alonso part of this initiative and it just goes to show how important motorsport safety is.”
