Adelaide Fringe and Womadelaide see record attendances
Adelaide’s major events of the autumn, the Adelaide Fringe and WOMADelaide have each been recording record attendances.
The Fringe festival has seen a record number of visitors this year, with more than 600,000 tickets sold, an increase of 12% compared to last year.
Adelaide Fringe Director Heather Croall, who oversaw her first Fringe this year, attributed the success to an impressive program of events and outstanding venues.
Croall stated “the calibre of Fringe shows in this year’s program across all genres has been of an incredibly high standard and ticket sales suggest that audiences have loved what they’ve seen.
“Between shows, audiences were delighted by the Fringe Illuminations along North Terrace, which attracted over 160,000 people.”
WOMADelaide is on track to smash last year’s ticket record after a capacity opening night crowd on the night of Friday 11th March.
About 20,000 people saw acts including The Cat Empire, Violent Femmes and Angelique Kidjo and the ASO kick off the four day music festival.
WOMADelaide Director Ian Scobie stated “it was our biggest Friday crowd on record and just an extraordinary start to the festival.
“Also, the rain that made the bump in difficult in the lead up meant that the Botanic Park is looking really lush and green this year which is just beautiful.”
Friday night’s crowd, along with a solid attendance yesterday, now means Womad 2016 may be it’s biggest on record.
Scobie added “our pre-sales have been great this year and coupled with some great weather on Sunday and Monday, the crowds should be strong.”
