$7 million redevelopment of Maitland Aquatic Centre moves forward
Consultants BVN Architecture Pty Ltd have been appointed to undertake the construction documentation and services for the construction of a new $7 million indoor pool at the Maitland Aquatic Centre.
Set to add to the Centre’s existing 50 metre pool, Maitland City Council anticipates calling tenders later this year for the construction of the the new 25 metre indoor facility, with a scheduled completion date of December 2016.
Maitland currently has two public pools, both of which are seasonal: the Maitland Aquatic Centre and the East Maitland Aquatic Centre.
Opened in 1940, the Maitland Aquatic Centre is an outdoor facility consisting of a solar heated 50 metre eight lane pool with ramp, three lane learner’s pool with ramp, an outdoor splash pad and a circular toddlers pool. The site also contains a kiosk, change rooms, swim club room, staff amenities, and grandstand and plant room.
The second centre, the East Maitland Aquatic Centre was opened in 1977. It is an outdoor facility consisting of a solar heated 50 metre, six lane pool and an oval toddler’s pool. The site also contains a kiosk, change rooms, grandstand and two plant room’s one for each pool.
Maitland has a current population of approximately 70,000 people, which is expected to climb to approximately 140,000 by 2036. The city is recognised as a key urban growth area in the Lower Hunter. So to meet the challenge of an expanding population and recognising the importance of the provision of adequate and relevant facilities, Maitland City Council undertook the preparation of an Aquatic Facility Development Strategy.
A key finding from the Aquatic Facility Development and Provision Strategy recommended that the Maitland Aquatic Centre be developed into a major new indoor/outdoor aquatic leisure and indoor sports centre servicing city wide needs.
A master plan for the future development of Maitland Aquatic Centre included the scope for the upgrade and maintenance of the existing outdoor 50 metre competition pool and associated spectator facilities, improvements to amenities, and a new indoor 25 metre competition pool. The master plan was then split into a staged priority plan linked to a funding strategy, with the first stage including the construction of a new indoor 25 metre pool.
