50 million visit Singapore attractions in 2011
Singapore attractions drew nearly 50 million visitors last year - a 7.3% increase in visitation compared to 2010.
Slightly over half (53.1%) of visitors to these attractions were locals, while the remaining 46.9% were foreign residents and international tourists.
The Association of Singapore Attractions (ASA) said the increase is likely due to a bumper crop of tourists, growth in Singapore's economy, organisation of main events and the opening of new attractions.
A total of 34 of its member attractions surveyed represent the lion's share of attractions in Singapore. They include a mix of both large and small operators such as the Singapore Zoo, Sentosa Island, National Heritage Board museums, Singapore Science Centre, Sentosa 4D Magix and Underwater World.
Attractions in the central Civic District saw the biggest increase in visitor numbers, up from 11.3% from the previous year.
An ASA spokesperson explained that "this could be attributed to the improved transport networks to the city, opening of new attractions such as the Marina Bay Sands, as well as the organisation of major exhibitions and festivals by the NHB museums."
Sentosa also enjoyed a 5.9% growth due to a positive 'halo effect' of new attractions opening on the island, as well as improved connectivity to the mainland.
