13,500 South Australian children take part in VACSWIM SA 2014
More than 13,500 South Australian children have been descending on pools and beaches this week to take part in the annual VACSWIM SA program.
Running from 6th to 14th January, the South Australia Government has this year increased its annual contribution from $533,000 to $580,000 to support the growing popularity of the program.
South Australian Recreation and Sport Minister Leon Bignell said VACSWIM, which is offered to young people aged five to 18 at more than 125 locations across the state, played an important role in teaching children how to swim and be safe in the water.
Minister Bignell stated "as South Australians, being in and around the water is part of our culture, so it is vitally important for children to learn to swim and be confident in the water from a young age.
"Since the 1950s VACSWIM SA has been an iconic part of the summer, teaching children the survival skills needed to be competent in the water, in a safe and fun environment.
"With alarming statistics released by the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia on the number of children at risk and drowning in aquatic situations the VACSWIM program is more important than ever."
The VACSWIM SA program is delivered by the YMCA on behalf of the South Australia Government, under the watchful eyes of 650 instructors.
Enrolment fees for 2014 are $30 per child and $50 for those participating in the Advanced Awards. The Family Fee is capped at $100 per family.
