Zoos SA EOFY appeal to help keep endangered animals warm through winter

Zoos SA’s end of financial year appeal aims to help with upkeep and costly maintenance of heating at the zoo during winter months.

Frosty mornings across the state this week have not only been felt by humans but also by the animals at Adelaide Zoo and Monarto Safari Park.

Zoos SA hopes that people’s generosity will allow them to update heating for the Sumatran Orangutan, Sumatran Tiger and Komodo Dragon at Adelaide Zoo and install heating for the new holding of Radiated Tortoises at Monarto Safari Park.

Director of Adelaide Zoo, Dr Phil Ainsley notes “after the city recorded its coldest morning in 2022 on Monday, the animals have been keeping toasty snuggling under their heat lamps, snoozing in the winter sun and curling up on in-floor heating incorporated into their exhibits.

“Keeping the furry, feathered and scaly residents at the zoo nice and snug is incredibly important.

“At Zoos SA we use a science-based approach to animal welfare that focuses on the Five Domains: Environment, behaviour, nutrition, health and positive mental state.

“When it comes to the endangered and exotic species the zoo cares for, we aim to emulate their natural habitat and environment in the wild.”

As an accredited not-for-profit conservation charity, the organisation is asking conservation supporters and animal lovers to “dig their paws deep to help keep the residents snug this winter”.

While generous folk can continue to donate throughout the year, today (30th June) is the last day to donate to the appeal to ensure the gift is tax deductible.

The installation of new heating bars in orangutans Puspa and Kluet’s night quarters will keep this critically-endangered twosome toasty, while Delilah the Sumatran Tiger will be equipped with a cosy den. At Monarto Safari Park, the Radiated tortoises are treated to warming heat lamps.
