Zoos SA becomes first wildlife attraction in the world to offer Duke of Edinburgh International Award

Zoos SA has become the first wildlife attraction in the world to be accredited as a Duke of Edinburgh International Award Centre, and is offering this prestigious and exciting program of courses to youths of all means, backgrounds and abilities aged 16-24.

Commencing in February 2021, Zoos SA will offer the Bronze and Silver programs to adventurers aged 16-24 with classes held at both Adelaide Zoo and Monarto Safari Park.

Zoos SA General Manager of Zoo Learning, Rebecca Phyland enthused “this is a very inclusive, innovative and exciting opportunity for students of all backgrounds and abilities.

“We are pleased to say that we have funding to support and subsidise those who need it, so we really want to encourage students of all abilities and financial situations to find out more and sign-up!

“The award scheme is broken down into a number of elements (skill, service, physical and adventurous journey). The skills area is driven by the individual, so there is the opportunity to develop their interests and goals - anything goes.

“Being based at Adelaide Zoo and Monarto Safari Park the service skill element will involve on-the-ground conservation work at Monarto Safari Park including animal food and enrichment preparation, Zoo Watch, biodiversity surveys, tree-planting and cleaning and preparing the exhibits.”

Phyland adds “The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme is a prestigious program that is recognised worldwide. Taking part is a fantastic way to develop life skills, foster creativity and innovation as well as being extremely attractive to prospective employers.

“All interested students, teachers and schools can find out more by visiting the Zoos SA website. We can’t wait to get applications.”

Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme students will meet outside of normal school hours with two cohorts running weekly at Adelaide Zoo or Monarto Safari Park. One Saturday a month, the entire group will meet at Monarto Safari Park. All sessions will be led by qualified indoor and outdoor educators.
