Zoggs expands environmental commitments with swimwear made from plastic waste and reduction in plastic goggle packaging

Leading swimming products manufacturer Zoggs is continuing with its commitment to help the environment through ongoing significant changes that will see the entire Zoggs Summer 2019 swimwear range made from plastic waste while reducing the plastic used in its goggle packaging by an initial 57% - with all packaging to be 100% sustainable by 2020.

Concerned over the massive amount of marine pollution caused by plastic, microbeads and fishing nets - that harm whales, sea turtles, dolphins and other marine life – Zoggs are passionate about preserving the oceans and making changes that can directly impact environmental protection.

The company advises “we firmly believe our planet cannot wait and we need to take action now (and now have a) mission to transform debris that’s damaging our oceans into high performance swimwear made with REPREVE® yarn (a comfortable high performance yearn made from fibre produced from recycled plastic bottles and consumer waste).”

As of July 2019, over 90% of Zoggs’ swimwear is made from Ecolast+™ fabric - using 55% REPREVE® yarn and 45% PBT - for a soft, comfortable, high performance swimwear fabric which is not just environmentally friendly but is also 100% chlorine proof.

Zoggs is so confident in the performance of its fabric that it offers a lifetime guarantee and we will replace any swimwear that wears out – unless for damage caused by improper use.

In developing the swimwear range, Zoggs put the fabric through its paces in real life conditions and found that it outperformed competitors’ fabrics, proving to be 100% chlorine proof as well as sustainable.

Zoggs further advises “we feel strongly about reducing the consumption of plastic and the introduction of Ecolast+™ is key to the Zoggs Sustainability Mission.

“We will continue to find more sustainable and more resourceful ways to produce fantastic products that stand up to testing by real swimmers.”

Zoggs’ other environmentally friendly initiative has seen seen all new goggle products produced from January 2019 now sold in a new Trap Blister/Cardboard Window Box style packaging.

This reduces the plastic in goggle packaging by 57% with 80% of all packaging including disposal or recovery labels. 

With plastic bags, the largest proportion of single-use plastics, the company is also introducing new oxy biodegradable plastic bags to protect swimwear. These new eco-bags safely degrade in the presence of oxygen, helping to reduce landfill volume.

In addition, the business is transitioning to eco-friendly hangers (fully in place for the second half of 2019) which are made from recycled post-consumer plastic waste like flower pots, toys and seeding containers.

Explaining this move for swimwear and packaging to be made using recycled, recyclable or degradable materials, Zoggs International Chief Executive, Mark Hammersley explains “we’re committed to doing everything we can to help the environment.

“By 2020, our mission is to have 100% sustainable packaging and 100% of our swimwear made from recycled materials.”
