World’s Largest Swimming Lesson recognised with anti-drowning award
The World Waterpark Association (WWA) was recently a recipient of the United States National Drowning Prevention Alliance’s prestigious Lighthouse Award for 2014.
The Award was given to the WWA’s World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ event in recognition of its “reach nationally and internationally about drowning prevention and water safety”.
Explaining the presentation of the Award, National Drowning Prevention Alliance Board member and USA Swimming executive Sue Nelson stated “having the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson Host Locations break the Guinness World Record™ was ingenious.
“Everyone who is a drowning advocate now wants to be part of the WLSL.”
WWA created the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson™ in 2010 as a platform to help aquatic facilities and the many different regional, national and international water safety organisations work together to communicate the fundamental importance of teaching children to swim.
Now in its fifth year, this global event will be held tomorrow (Friday 20th June) reaching more than 50,000 participants in live events – spreading the word that Swimming Lessons Save Lives™ to more than 100 million children and adults around the world.
WWA President Rick Root added “The WWA created the WLSL event, but we believe that the reason it has been so successful and why it is being recognized with a Lighthouse Award is due to the fact that the drowning prevention community has embraced it wholeheartedly since it started.
“Our outstanding supporting organisations, media partners and thousands of host locations have made the WLSL event what it is today.
“We thank them and the NDPA for their support and recognition.”
The WWA is the world's premier water-leisure trade association serving more than 1,000 park and supplier members representing 42 countries. Since its inception 33 years ago, the WWA has been the leading advocate for the development of the water leisure industry for its park and supplier members.
The National Drowning Prevention Alliance is a non-profit organisation created to provide the public with drowning prevention and water safety education and programs.
