Works underway on Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre

Works are now underway on a much-needed multi-purpose sports facility in Fitzroy, located in Melbourne’s inner-north.

The innovative sports centre is being constructed by Built Environs on the Fitzroy Gasworks site and is scheduled to be completed in early 2024.

The Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre will comprise four multi-purpose courts over two levels, a 1,000-plus square metre gymnasium, café and lounge area, community facilities, change rooms, umpire change rooms, foyer and reception.

The sports centre will form part of a solution to the shortage of sporting facilities within Melbourne’s inner northern region, particularly in the City of Yarra. It will provide court space to a number of sporting codes including basketball, netball, volleyball and futsal and will cater to both training and competition activities for local and regional sporting participants as well as general community use.

The new sports centre will be designed and constructed to integrate with the two indoor sports courts of the Wurun Senior Campus, which opened this year, to enable shared use and create a six-court facility outside of school hours.

The vertical design of the centre is in response to the demand for sports facilities in built-up inner-city areas – providing room for a range of local sports clubs including the Collingwood Basketball Association.

The Victorian Government is investing $49.5 million in the project, with the remaining $5 million coming from Yarra City Council, who will manage the centre once open.

The project forms part of the Government’s vision for the Fitzroy Gasworks Precinct to create a new neighbourhood that will be home for more than a thousand families.
