Works begin on Blackwater Aquatic Centre redevelopment

Construction of the new Blackwater Aquatic Centre has commenced following a recent sod turning ceremony attended by local dignitaries.

The $14.8 million redevelopment is set to deliver three swimming pools, including a splash pad, a covered and heated 25-metre activity pool and a partially covered 50 metre-10 lane competition pool.

The project has been jointly funded by the Australian Government through the second round of the National Stronger Regions Fund and the Central Highlands Regional Council, who both contributed $6.2 million for the development and fit-out of the new centre.

BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance will also provide $2.3 million towards the project.

The project is a joint effort, funded by the Australian Government through the second round of the National Stronger Regions Fund and the Central Highlands Regional Council, who both contributed $6.2 million for the development and fit-out of the new centre.

BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance will also provide $2.3 million towards the project.

Welcoming the construction, Federal member for Flynn Ken O'Dowd said the new facility would provide a modern water space for the whole community to enjoy.

The new facility will also meet Swimming Australia Guidelines, allowing Blackwater to host regional athletic meets.

Funding for the new facility was agreed back in 2013 but the discovery, in July of that year, of an historic graveyard within the boundaries of the pool site containing more than 200 human remains delayed the project.

With new plans agreed, construction is expected to the completed by January 2017.

Blackwater is significant coal mining area in Central Queensland, 195 kilometres west of Rockhampton.
